| Ladder Climb | |
| Purpose: to assess the applicant for fear of heights. | |
|
A 40’ firefighting PFRS ladder will be erected in a safe and secure location. A department member will demonstrate a climb to a point half way up the ladder, do a leg lock and return to ground level. Each applicant will be
warned to stop if they experience difficulty when doing the exercise.
Each applicant will then don a department turnout coat and SCBA
(no face piece), climb the ladder to the same point as in the
demonstration, do a leg lock and return to ground level. The applicant will be rated "pass/fail". PFRS evaluators will note any hesitation or difficulty of the applicant in performing the task.

| SCBA Face Piece Wear | |
| Purpose: to assess the applicant for claustrophobia | |
|

A PFRS member will
demonstrate the donning and doffing of a PFRS SCBA face piece and
explain the test procedure to be followed. Each applicant will be warned to stop if they experience difficulty when doing the exercise. Each applicant will then don a PFRS turnout coat, SCBA and face piece, which has been covered to prevent the applicant from seeing. A PFRS member, ensuring the applicant’s safety, will then direct the applicant around the building. The applicant will be directed:

To follow a number of step and direction movements [for example, "take two steps forward and one to the left"]
The applicant will be rated "pass/fail". PFRS evaluators will note any hesitation or difficulty of the applicant in performing the task.

| Hose Coupling | |
| Purpose: to assess the applicant for manual dexterity. | |
|
|
A PFRS member will demonstrate the coupling of the following equipment:
Each applicant will be
warned to stop if they experience difficulty when doing the exercise.
Each applicant will then don department turnout coat, SCBA (no
face piece) and gloves, be taken to the uncoupled components and shall
connect the various parts as shown, then disconnect the equipment and
return the nozzle and gated wye to the start point.

| Minute Man Hose Advance | |
| Purpose: to assess the applicant for physical ability | |
|
A PFRS member will
demonstrate the carry of an Minute Man Hose advance to the top floor of
the test building, while wearing a SCBA, but not wearing the face piece. Each applicant will be
warned to stop if they experience difficulty when doing the exercise.
Each applicant will then don a turnout coat, helmet and SCBA
without the face piece, and carry the apartment pack to the top floor of
the test building and back to ground level again.

| Dummy Drag | |
| Purpose: to assess the applicant for physical ability | |
|
A
department member will demonstrate the drag of a 125-pound dummy a
marked distance of approximately 50 feet. Each
applicant will be warned to stop if they experience difficulty when
doing the exercise. Each
applicant will then don a turnout coat, boots and pants, helmet, SCBA
and blanked out face piece [not connected to the SCBA], and drag the
dummy the same marked distance.
